One day we were all mustered in the station theater and the Capt shared his experiences as a POW: he said it was part of his recovery program.

That was a long time ago, but it was an experience I have never forgotten. It was cathartic for him and made a deep impression on the rest of us.

Capt Alcorn was a proud patriot and it showed in all his actions…

For instance, contact with the submarine did not occur at 0300 local to our time on the ship. We were operating on JST and the collision was just after 2200.

Dad was restricted to shore duty but Bob crossed the North Atlantic 46 times. They got no respect from the so-called armed forces even though their merchant marines had a higher death rate than any armed branches. Bob was called up during the Korean War and died there. My dad grieved the loss of his best friend until he died in 2007. I am glad the mercant marines have finally been recognized for their service. Moody county South Dakota has always recognized their service on the war memorial there.

I would love to see him honored in some way for his service and sacrifices
